ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a method to identify regions that make up features like holes, slots and pockets in three dimensional triangular meshes. Features recognition is an important area in the field of CAD/engineering with applications in model retrieval, creating an analysis model by defeaturing of the designed model for finite element applications, etc. The proposed algorithm tries to identify the volumetric features using contours generated by randomized cutting planes, followed by graph traversals. The algorithm can identify blind holes, through holes, slots and pockets. Extensive experiments on engineering models show that the algorithm is fairly robust, capturing small as well as big features, and in intricate location size.
