In the proposed method the measurement gap switching (change from one gap pattern to another) is done based on quality of service parameters in a multiservice scenario in a cellular wireless system, so that the UE is always being served with the most optimum measurement gap pattern. Some UEs are capable to perform measurements on another frequency while performing Rx/Tx on the current frequency (dual receiver). But most other UEs' need idle periods for making neighbor measurements or inter-RAT measurements. In such cases the network needs to provide enough idle periods for the UE to perform the requested measurements. Such idle periods are created by the scheduler Normally the idle periods/ gaps (called measurement gap pattern) are assigned to the UE based on a conservative approach and the gap pattern is not changed throughout the measurement requirement. The invention allows the measurement gap pattern to be changed/ modified based on the QOS parameters of the services in a multi-service call scenario.[IN-CHE-2007-02811A]
