The present disclosure is directed to compositionsand methods which utilize the tetracycline scaffold,preferably the scaffold of minocycline, and which significantlylack antibiotic activity. The compounds have neuroprotectiveattributes without interfering with the drugs capacityto pass through the blood brain barrier. These compoundshave neuroprotective activity because of their inhibitionof neuronal cell cycle progression. The compoundsare characterized m part by a fifth ring joining positions 9and 10.
