The invention relates to a method for operating a decentralised device (12, 14) for controlled room ventilation, the device comprising a flow duct extending between a room (10) to be ventilated and evacuated and the outdoor air, in which duct a ventilator, which is reversible between a ventilation operation and an evacuation operation, and a heat reservoir, through which the conveyed air flows in order to reduce the heat loss of the exhaust air, are provided. The reversible ventilator can be switched periodically between ventilation and evacuation in at least one operating mode of the device (12, 14). According to the method, in the operating mode with periodic switching between ventilation and evacuation, the duration of the ventilation and/or evacuation phases is varied according to at least one environment parameter or operating parameter.
