A point-and-read machine and a control method for the point-and-read machine. The point-and-read machine comprises: a point-and-read machine body (300). The point-and-read machine body (300) comprises a housing (310) and a display screen (320) connected to the housing (310). Provided on the front side of the housing (310) are buttons (200) and a distance detecting element (110) used for detecting the distance between the human eyes and the display screen (320). Provided within the housing (310) is an inbuilt speaker (120) for beeping when the distance between the human eyes and the display screen detected by the distance detecting element (110) is less than 0.4 meters. A point-and-read stylus (140) is connected to a side of the housing (310) via a retractable cord (141). The inbuilt speaker (120) in the point-and-read machine body (300) beeps to remind a user to maintain distance from the display screen (320), thus preventing the user from experiencing eye fatigue and myopia as the result of the eyes coming too close to the screen, and facilitating use for the user.
