The present application provides a method and apparatus of switching of a gigabit-capable passive optical network system, an Optical Network Unit (ONU), and an Optical Line Terminal (OLT). The method for switching of a gigabit-capable passive optical network applied to an ONU comprises: determining whether a timer in a POPUP state times out; if the timer does not time out, detecting whether a trigger message sent by the OLT and used to trigger switching from the POPUP state to a ranging state is received; if the trigger message is not received, before the timer times out, regularly sending, at predetermined time intervals, to the OLT a notification message for notifying the OLT to resend the trigger message until the timer times out or the trigger message is received and the ONU switches from the POPUP state to the ranging state on the basis of the trigger message.
