There is provided a communication system that estimates an available bandwidth with high accuracy in a short time and with a low load. The communication system is provided with: a transmission-side apparatus 500 that transmits a packet train; and a reception-side apparatus 600. The reception apparatus 600 is provided with: a packet train reception unit 601; an ideal-curve storage unit 602 in which information indicating a lower-limit expansion ideal curve composed of a queuing delay, information indicating an in-range ideal curve composed of the queuing delay and a serialization delay, and information indicating an upper-limit expansion ideal curve composed of the serialization delay are stored; an ideal-curve selection unit 604 that selects, from among the lower-limit expansion ideal curve, the in-range ideal curve, and the upper-limit expansion ideal curve, an ideal curve most similar to a delay increasing trend exhibited by a delay increase amount based on observation data calculated by a delay-increase-amount calculation unit 603; and an available-bandwidth estimation unit 605 that estimates an available bandwidth on the basis of the selection result.
