The invention relates to a nitrate-based heat storage medium, in particular a binary nitrate salt mixture. The invention proposes for the first time a heat storage medium for use in solar-thermal power plants that are operated with thermal oils as a heat transfer medium which can be produced on the basis of nitrate, in particular on the basis of a binary salt mixture of sodium and calcium nitrate and requires either no potassium nitrate at all or just a small amount of potassium nitrate. This is important in particular because, in countries in which solar-thermal power plants may become an important source of energy, potassium nitrate is primarily used for agriculture as a fertiliser for food production.
