A system is disclosed that includes a sensor for acquiring a physiological bioelectrical impedance signal from a patient functionally connected to a computing device. Preferably, the computing device analyzes the physiological bioelectrical impedance signal and provides an output for an assessment of the patient ' s ventilation rate based on the analyzed bioelectrical impedance signal. Preferably, the system monitors the signal over time, automatically decreasing the drug level when the respiratory level falls, or providing a control signal instructing the IV pump to automatically regulate the drug level by completely stopping the flow of the drug IV pump.
