The acoustic emission test apparatus includes a test sample including a hard surface, an acoustic sensor, an indenter connected to the hard surface, and a load. The load is applied to the indenter, which transfers the load to the hard surface. The acoustic sensor is communicatively coupled to the test sample and detects one or more acoustic events that occur within the test sample. The acoustic emission test system includes a data recorder connected to the test apparatus. The data recorder records the data from the test apparatus. Based on the received data, the toughness of the sample may be determined objectively and may be graded relative to the toughness of the other samples. The load is ramped up to the peak load, held for a period of time, and then ramped down.
