A remote unit (12) for a distributed antenna system (10), the remote unit (16) comprising: an RFID interrogator (52); a system controller (50) in communication with the RFID interrogator (52); wherein the remote unit (12) is configured to couple to at least one passive component via a cable (30), wherein the remote unit (12) transmits downlink RF signals to at least one antenna (34) via the cable (30) and wherein the remote unit (12) receives uplink RF signals from the at least one antenna (34) via the cable (30); wherein upon initiation by the system controller (50), the RFID interrogator (52) is configured to interrogate an RFID system (40) of the at least one passive component by transmitting an interrogation signal via the cable (30), and receive a response signal back from the RFID system (40) via the cable (30), the response signal including data associated with the interrogation signal.
