The inventor has used cyclodextrins as an alternative to proteoglycans to create biomimetic collagen-based matrix compositions. The incorporation of cyclodextrin produced in the collagen composition of the present invention increased collagen thermal stability and reduced collagen fibril formation. As a result, a thick, transparent and mechanically strong collagen-based composition was formed. These cyclodextrin-collagen compositions have great potential that can be used as therapeutic ocular implants for corneal repair. Furthermore, the composition supports the development of multilayer structures having different layers that promote various biological properties. Also provided are methods for producing these inventive compositions and their use.
