A centrifugal balance weight is provided having an adjustable center of gravity. The counterweight of the centrifuge includes an elongated body having a distal end and a proximal end, a weight configured to be reversibly fixed at a position along the longitudinal axis of the elongated body, and a counterweight of the centrifuge. And a base configured to operably couple to the centrifuge. Further provided are systems suitable for carrying out the method and subject method of balancing the centrifuge rotor when separating components of a liquid sample by centrifugation.
