PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a technical problem of enhancing a yield and a rate of hydrogen production in a hydrogen production method that produces hydrogen from biomass such as woody biomass using a microbial process.SOLUTION: Hydrogen is produced by using, as a base material of a microbial electrolysis cell, a hemicellulose decomposition product and a cellulose decomposition product obtained by treating woody biomass with high temperature and high pressure water. Cellulose remaining as a solid is decomposed by hydrogen generating bacteria having a cellulose decomposition function to produce hydrogen. In another route, a fermentation liquid having an organic acid such as an acetic acid as a main component and the microbial electrolysis cell are used to produce hydrogen. An aminated carbon electrode is used for an anode of the microbial electrolysis cell, while an electrolysis modified carbon electrode is used for a cathode that generates hydrogen. A yield and a rate of hydrogen production are thus remarkably enhanced and the hydrogen production cost is reduced. A resource-recycling hydrogen production plant using recyclable woody biomass as a raw material may be achieved.
