Compositions having a core and a coating covering at least part of the core, wherein the core comprises a mixture of at least one oilfield chemical and at least one core matrix polymer are described. The composition provides for a slower release of an oilfield chemical into an eluent compared to the release provided by the nucleus. The compositions provide for controlled release of the tracer for longer periods of time than is provided by release from the core. Methods for producing the compositions and systems containing the compositions are described. Methods for tracking fluid movement in a hydrocarbon reservoir using the compositions, and methods for releasing biocides and other wall treatment agents in reservoir fluids over time are also described.
