An electronic ignition system (15) for an internal combustion engine is described. The system comprises a coil (2) having a primary winding (2.1) and a secondary winding (2.2) connected to a spark plug (3). the system further comprises a high voltage switch (4) connected in series with the primary winding and having a control terminal (i4c) carrying a control signal (s_ctrl) to control the opening or closing of the high voltage switch; comprises first (10-1), second (10-2) and third (10-3) switches and a drive unit (5). unit (5) is configured at the primary load phase (t_chg) to generate the control signal (s_ctrl) to close switch (4) and to generate drive (s1_drv), (s2_drv) and (s3_drv) signals for the switches. said unit is configured, during a phase of energy transfer (t_tr) from primary to secondary winding, to generate (t2) the control signal (s_ctrl) to open the switch (4) and to generate (t3) the signal of (s1_drv) to open the switch (10-1). said unit is further configured during a measurement phase (t_ion) of the ionization current to generate the control signal to open the switch (4), to generate the first drive signal to open the switch (10-1), generate (t4) the second drive signal to close switch (10-2) and generate (t5) the third drive signal to close switch (10-3).
