The invention relates to a rack and pinion gear (1) with variable ratio, meant for a steering box for motor cars. According to the invention, the gear comprises a classic evolvent pinion gear and a rack (2) having some linear broken flanks, an end flank of a tooth of the rack (2) being formed of a linear segment having a pressure angle which corresponds to a subsequent flank, thereby resulting a broken flank, which allows two pairs of teeth to be geared, said gearing being carried out on a portion (a-b), thereafter it passes to the following portion (c-d) of the flank of a different angle, during gearing on the above mentioned portion, another pair of teeth engages on a portion (d'-c'), there resulting a covering degree greater than 1.
