The present invention describes the synthesis and characterization of acidic carbon aerogels doped with Co (0), as an excellent catalyst for the preparation of quinolines by condensation of Friedländer between 2-aminoarylaldehydes and other carbonyl compounds. The catalytic activity that some of these aerogels have in this transformation is greater than that observed for other heterogeneous catalysts previously described; the corresponding quinolines were synthesized with excellent yields during shorter reaction times and considerably minimizing the amount of catalyst used in the process. The procedure described can be carried out in the absence of solvent, minimizing the isolation and purification steps of the quinolines obtained.
