A composition for use in the treatment of age-associated memory impairment (AMAE) in a mammal, the composition comprising: acetoacetate; D-β-hydroxybutyrate; an acetoacetate ester, a 1,3-butane diol or D-β-hydroxybutyrate moiety with trihydric, polohydric, monohydric or dihydric alcohol; a 3-hydroxy acid selected from hydroxybutyric acid, 3-hydroxyvaleric acid, 3-hydroxyhexanoic acid or 3-hydroxyheptanoic acid or an ester thereof; or a glycerol ester; wherein the composition is capable of directly raising the concentrations of the ketone bodies in the patient's body.
