Method for predicting the risk of getting cancer in a female subject who does not suffer from cancer, which comprises: - determining the level of proencephalin or fragments thereof in a body fluid obtained from said female subject; and - correlating said level of proencephalin or fragments thereof with the risk of getting cancer, in which a reduced level is predictive of an increased risk of getting cancer; in which a reduced level means a level below a certain threshold; wherein said proencephalin or fragment thereof is selected from the group comprising SEQ ID No. 1, SEQ ID No. 2, SEQ ID No. 5, SEQ ID No. 6, SEQ ID No. 8, SEQ ID No. 9, SEQ ID. No. 10 and SEQ ID No. 11.
