A method for predicting short-term cloud coverage, the procedure comprising: calculating (605), by means of a computer, an estimated cloud velocity field at a current time value based on a plurality of sky images; determine (610), using the computer, a segmented cloud model based on the plurality of sky images; determine (615), by means of the computer, a location of future sun corresponding to a future time value; determine (620), by means of the computer, a plurality of solar pixel locations in the future time value based on the future location of the sun; applying (625), by means of the computer, a back-propagation algorithm to the plurality of solar pixel locations using the estimated cloud velocity field to produce a plurality of propagated solar pixel locations corresponding to an earlier time value; and predict (630), through the computer, the cloud coverage for the future location of the sun based on the plurality of propagated solar pixel locations and the segmented cloud model.
