A system extracting features from a time-varying signal comprising a computerprocessor and a computer readable medium having computer executableinstructions forproviding: a bank of bandpass filters; a module approximating the output ofthose filters withnonlinear components; a module representing a decorrelated projection of theoutput of thefilters with nonlinear components; and a module representing the temporalderivative of thedecorrelated information with nonlinear components.
