The invention generally relates to systems and methods for identifying preload prior to inform an elasticity assessment. Systems and methods of the invention provide for identifying a reference corresponding to the interface between the probe and the subject, determining one or more displacement values between the probe and the subject and relative to the reference, wherein the displacement values are selected from the group consisting of zero displacement, negative displacement, positive displacement and undefined displacement, and generating a preload indicator for the elasticity scan using at least one displacement value.
