Provided are a method for inducing programmed cell death in cancer cells and a pharmaceutical composition therefor. The method for inducing programmed cell death in cancer cells includes causing an increase in the production of nitric oxide in the cancer cells. The pharmaceutical composition for inducing programmed cell death in cancer cells contains, as an active substance, a compound that increases nitric oxide production in cancer cells. The compound that increases nitric oxide production in cancer cells is used in a method for preventing, ameliorating, inhibiting the progression of, and/or treating cancer.
