Compact optical sources and methods for generating short and ultra-short optical pulses are described. A semiconductor laser or LED 2-423 may be driven using a positive waveform to produce optical pulses with FWHM duration times as short as about 85 ps with suppressed tail emission. Pulsed optical sources may be used for fluorescence lifetime analysis and TOF (time-of-flight) imaging of biological samples, among other applications.
