The present invention relates to a method for preparing isotropic pitch with a high softening point for carbon fiber. More specifically, the present invention provides a method for preparing pitch, comprising a step of heat-treating a carbon material under a mixed gas atmosphere of an oxidative gas and an inert gas. The method for preparing pitch according to the present invention is capable of obtaining pitch with a high softening point without a complicated process or help of a catalyst agent, thereby efficiently reducing process costs. In addition, the isotropic pitch with a high softening point prepared by the method of the present invention has excellent radioactivity when used as a precursor of carbon fiber, and isotropic carbon fiber obtained therefrom has excellent physical properties, thereby being used as an important material throughout industrial fields such as automobiles, space aviation, civil engineering, electronics and power, sustainable energy, environments and the like.
