Passenger pickup arrangement of autonomous vehicles

Aspects of the present disclosure relate to placing a pickup between an unmanned vehicle and a passenger. For example, dispatch instructions for dispatching a vehicle to a predetermined pickup area to pick up a passenger are received by the vehicle, and the vehicle begins to move to a predetermined pickup area. During this, the vehicle receives the location of the device from the passenger's client computing device. An indication that the passenger is interested in fly-by pickup is identified. The fly-by pickup allows the passenger to enter the vehicle safely before the one or more processors move the vehicle to a predetermined pickup area at a location outside the predetermined pickup area. The vehicle determines that the fly-by pickup is at least appropriate based on the location and indication of the client computing device and, based on this determination, moves on its own to attempt fly-by pickup.
