A method for deep welding a workpiece (2), wherein a surface of the workpiece (2) is irradiated with a first laser beam (11) and a second laser beam (12), wherein in a workpiece surface plane (OE) a first beam width B1 of the first laser beam ( 11) is greater than a second beam width B2 of the second laser beam (12), and wherein at least in the workpiece surface plane (OE) of the second laser beam (12) within the first laser beam (11), characterized in that the intensity of the first laser beam (11) alone is sufficient to produce a vapor capillary (6) in the workpiece (2), and that the vapor capillary (6) produced in the workpiece (2) has a capillary width KB in the workpiece surface plane (OE), KB being substantially the same size is like B1, and furthermore B2 ≤ 0.75 * KB. The invention provides a laser deep welding method in which a good seam quality can be achieved with high welding depth and high feed speed.
