The invention relates to a process for producing hexafluoroisopropanol, comprising the steps of (a) purifying a mixture containing hexafluoroacetone and at least 1,1,1-trifluoro-2,2-dichloroethane as a impurity, thereby giving purified hexafluoroacetone containing 120 ppm or less of 1,1,1-trifluoro-2,2-dichloroethane; and (b) contacting hydrogen (H2) with the purified hexafluoroacetone in the presence of a catalyst, thereby hydrogenating hexafluoroacetone to hexafluoroisopropanol. With this process, it is possible to produce hexafluoroisopropanol in a short conversion time and with a high conversion. It is therefore possible to produce in a particularly advantageous manner hexafluoroisopropyl fluoromethyl ether (sevoflurane) using the hexafluoroisopropanol produced by this process.
