The present invention relates to a heterogeneous catalyst comprising silica (SiO2) and a metal co-oxide selected from the group consisting of magnesium oxide (MgO), calcium oxide (CaO), barium oxide (BaO) and zinc oxide (ZnO) and having a metal co-oxide/SiO₂ molar ratio between 0.05 and 0.3. The invention also relates to a process for preparing esters of one or more fatty acids with one or more alcohols comprising the step of reacting the one or more fatty acids with the one or more alcohols in the presence of the heterogenous catalyst, and to a process for manufacturing the heterogeneous catalyst.
