Managing multiple profiles for a single account in an asynchronous messaging system

A plurality of profiles are received in association with the first user account within the asynchronous messaging system. The associated profile is sent to user clients associated with other user accounts for storage as a local copy. The relevance has to include in the contact list of the first user or in the contact list of other users. The associated profile is sent when a message is sent from the first account to another user client, or when the profile is created or updated. The public profile has a version identifier that is updated when the public profile is updated. Updating the local copy of the public profile on other user clients only occurs when the local copy of the associated version identifier indicates that the local profile has expired.
