This document provides compositions and methods for producing plant cells with modified Ht1 nucleotide sequences, modified NLB18 sequences, or both. The methods include introducing double strand breaks into the maize genome in an endogenous sequence encoding Ht1, an endogenous sequence encoding NLB18, or both, to modify the genomic sequence to increase resistance to northern spotting of plant leaves obtained from a plant cell. Additionally, methods are provided by which resistance-related Ht1 and / or NLB18 alleles are introduced at specific sites in the genome. Also covered are plants obtained from plant cells and seeds obtained from plants. Guide polynucleotides are also provided for using the CRISPR-Cas system in inducing double-strand breaks.
