A method (A) for screening an individual for cancer, comprising the steps of i) extracting free nucleic acids from a sample obtained from the individual, ii) determining the total concentration of mitochondrial free nucleic acids, iii) determine the total concentration of nuclear free nucleic acids, iv) calculate the ratio of the level determined in step ii) with respect to the concentration determined in step iii) (cnDNA content ratio), v) compare the ratio determined in step iv) with a predetermined corresponding reference value and vi) conclude that the individual suffers from cancer when the ratio determined in step iv) is less than the predetermined corresponding reference value, or conclude that the individual does not suffer from cancer when the ratio determined in step iv) is greater than the corresponding predetermined reference value.
