The invention relates to a method for identifying a suitable wire (10), which is made of a high-strength steel in particular, preferably with a tensile strength of at least 1500 N/mm2 and/or preferably with a diameter of at least 3 mm, in order to produce a connection element (12) for wire mesh (14, 16) or the like. According to the invention, the wire (10) is identified as being suitable if a test piece (18) of the wire (10) can be bent around at least one bending cylinder (20, 22) by more than 90° at least once without breaking in at least one bending test, the diameter of said cylinder being smaller than the diameter of the wire, in particular the radius of the wire (10). The invention also relates to a method for producing a connection element for wire mesh, to a connection element, to a mesh installation, and to a method for producing a mesh installation.
