The energy consumption in electrolysis processes is to be reduced. Proposed for this purpose is an electrolysis process in which a pulsed voltage is applied between an anode and a cathode, and the currently applicable OCP (open circuit potential or open circuit voltage) that the cathode has in a deenergized state with respect to a reference system is repeatedly measured or an OCP profile is prescribed.
