A sleep stage classification method and system, and a terminal device. The sleep stage classification method comprises the following steps: S11, when a smart terminal is in a non-still state, obtaining the orientation relationship between a polysomnography worn by a user and the smart terminal; S12, determining whether the orientation relationship meets a first preset condition; S13, if the orientation relationship meets the first preset condition, obtaining the distance between the polysomnography and the smart terminal; and S14, if the distance is within a preset distance, determining that the user is in wakefulness. When the smart terminal is in a non-still state, if it is detected that the orientation relationship is that the display screen of the smart terminal faces the face side of the polysomnography worn by the user, and the distance between the display screen and said face side is less than a preset distance, it can be determined that the user is using the smart terminal, and then it can be further determined that the user is in wakefulness. Thus, the accuracy of the determining result about the sleep stage of the user can be improved.
