The present invention relates to a device (1) and a corresponding method for determining residual blood in a dialyser (2), said device having: a receiving device (6) which is designed to receive a dialyser (2); an image capture device (7) which is designed to capture at least one image of a dialyser (2) received by the receiving device (6), in particular of a filter (4) located in the dialyser (2) and to create corresponding image data, which have a plurality of pixels, to each of which at least one intensity value, in particular one colour value, is assigned; and a control device (9) which is designed to determine residual blood information that characterises the presence and/or content of residual blood in the dialyser (2) based on a statistical frequency of at least some of the intensity values in the at least one image. The invention also relates to a dialysis system having such a device (1).
