A method is disclosed for grafting a liquid crystal coating onto a substrate and an article comprising a substrate having a liquid crystal coating. The liquid crystal coating may comprise (a) applying a primer layer comprising a type II photoinitiator to the surface of the substrate, and then (b) applying a coating mixture comprising one or more liquid crystal monomers to an area of the substrate, and then ( c) irradiating the coating mixture to form a liquid crystal coating. The coating mixture may further comprise a second amount of type II photoinitiator. The method can be carried out at ambient air, room temperature or ambient pressure and the resulting liquid crystal coating can exhibit improved adhesion properties to the substrate.
