Disclosed are a data compression system for an image-based embedded wireless sensor network, which is capable of overcoming restriction in calculation and memory resources, and a method thereof. According to one embodiment of the present invention, an embedded device included in the data compression system is a sensor node forming the image-based embedded wireless sensor network with a server, and comprises: a photograph unit periodically photographing an installation position to acquire image data; an image compression unit compressing the image data in accordance with a K-average clustering-based algorithm and a Huffman coding-base algorithm; a node communication unit transmitting raw image data and compressed image data through multi-hop communication network with the server, and receiving compression information including centroid information and Huffman code information from the server; and a node control unit transmitting the raw image data every preset learning cycle and activating the image compression unit after reception of the compression information to transmit the compressed image data.
