Provided is a BIM data-based virtual reality simulation platform which comprises: a BIM data format conversion engine; a material library; a material mapping unit; and a BIM data light-weight engine wherein the BIM data format conversion engine converts a format of inputted BIM data, the material mapping unit maps a material stored in the material library to a material of the BIM data of which the format is converted, and the BIM data light-weight engine reduces the amount of the BIM data to which the material is mapped. Furthermore, a virtual reality simulation method using the BIM data-based virtual reality simulation platform comprises: a 3D modeling step (1) of modeling a building or a civil engineering structure by using a 3D modeling tool; a data conversion step (2) of allowing the BIM data format conversion engine to convert a format of data into a 3D neutral file format to transmit modeled BIM data; an attribute data extracting step (3) of extracting attribute data as an excel file to map a material to the BIM data of which the format is converted; a mapping step (4) of allowing the material mapping unit to map the material stored in the material library to the material of the BIM data in association with the excel file; and a data lightweighting step (5) of allowing the BIM data light-weight engine to reduce the amount of the BIM data, to which the material is mapped, for smooth simulation in a virtual reality environment. According to the present invention, the simulation is automatically combined with the BIM data and projected into the virtual reality environment without an additional coding operation.
