The fifth wheel (1) is intended to equip a towing vehicle. It comprises a locking and unlocking system (2) for the kingpin (3) and a system (4) for installing a cowling part (5) around the kingpin (3). The constituent means of the locking and unlocking system (2) are mounted on holding and centring arms (9a, 9b) that pivot between a moved-together closed position and a spaced-apart open position. These arms each have a cutout (12a, 12b) which, in the moved-together position, forms a slot for receiving the kingpin (3). The system (4) for installing a cowling part comprises a store (22) containing several cowling parts, a holder (23) for cowling parts that is movable vertically for installing a cowling part (5) around the kingpin (3), and a supply device (29) which provides the holder with cowling parts (5) from the store (22).
