Method of determining degradation level of catalytic converter comprises disturbance of catalytic converter by feeding exhaust gases thereto. Data are then sent from an upstream oxygen sensor through the model to provide a calculation of the derivative of the model output signal and data from the downstream oxygen sensor through the high-pass filter. Model output signal is filtered and the magnitude of the gain of the transfer function of the neutraliser is determined from the difference between the air-fuel ratio derivative filtered in the band-pass filter in the exhaust pipe and the derivative of the model output signal. Further, fuel injectors of the engine are adjusted considering said magnitude of the transfer function of the neutraliser.;EFFECT: higher accuracy of degradation determination.;10 cl, 7 dwg
