The invention relates to a method for assisting a driver of a motor vehicle (12) when parking on a parking space (16) using a driver assistance device of the motor vehicle (12), the method comprising the steps of: in a training mode of the driver assistance device: recording and storing reference data via a path given by a trajectory (22) from a reference start position (24) to a reference end position (26) at the parking lot (16) while the motor vehicle (12) is driven on the path (22) under the control of the driver; and in a subsequent operation mode different from the training mode: driving the motor vehicle (12) toward the reference end position (26) at the parking lot (16) under the control of the driver assistance apparatus using the reference data. The driver assistance device checks during operation in the operating mode whether a remaining portion of the path to the reference end position (26) for the motor vehicle (12) is accessible, and notifies the user if at least one obstacle (32) is detected on the remaining part of the path.
