A method of establishing a myoelectrically controlled prosthetic system having a prosthetic socket (20) and a plurality of electrical muscle activity sensing electrodes (10) comprising the steps of: applying a surface electrode assembly (200) having a plurality of surface electrodes (100) around the perimeter of a limb stump (1); electrical muscle activity on muscles of the limb stump (1) as electromyographic signals through the surface electrodes (100), evaluation of the myoelectric signals for their signal distinctness, selection of the control method by which the prosthesis system is controlled, based on the evaluation of the signal distinctness, and setting of the lead electrodes (10) on the prosthesis shaft (20).
