Communication of a message using a network interface controller in a subnet

Certain embodiments described herein provide a system for enabling the communication of a message using a network interface controller (NIC) in a subnet. In one example, the system is applicable to hardware-deploying NICs, such as those implementing the portal protocol. The system may be configured to determine a NIC in a first subnet for use in communicating a message, the NIC configured to correspond to a message passing interface protocol, to create a manifest that is an identifier of the NIC contains and a subnet ID that identifies the first subnet, and the manifest to communicate to the recipient. If it is determined that the NIC in the first subnet to use to communicate the message is a non-operational NIC and is not operational, the system may determine the network element containing the non-operational NIC, a spare NIC in FIG but determine a different subnet on the same network element containing the inoperative NIC and communicate with the replacement NIC using the other subnet.
