To provide a surveying instrument and system with which apparatus settings and used data are managed separately for each individual user.SOLUTION: A surveying instrument 1 comprises an individual authentication sensor 28, a control unit 24, and a storage unit 25. A individual information registration unit 241 of the control unit 24 acquires individual authentication information from the individual authentication sensor 28 in advance and stores it in association with user information in an individual identification database 251 of the storage unit 25. An individual authentication execution unit 242 of the control unit 24 specifies a user before activation of the measuring instrument 1 depending on whether or not the authentication data acquired by the individual authentication sensor 28 matches the individual authentication information stored in the individual identification information database 251. An individual setting application unit 243 of the control unit 24 refers to the individual setting information database 252 of the storage unit 25 and, when apparatus setting has been stored by an authenticated user, applies the apparatus setting and activates the surveying instrument 1.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
