The invention relates to a method for determining the mass and the position of the centre of gravity of an additional load (10) of a movement system (12), in particular of a machine tool (14), which comprises a carrier (20), which is rotatable about at least a first axis (16) and a second axis (18) and is intended for receiving the additional load (10), and also electronically controlled drives (22, 24), which are intended for turning the carrier (20) about the first axis (16) and about the second axis (18), wherein an overall moment of inertia and a holding moment with respect to the first axis (16) are determined in a laden state; an overall moment of inertia and a holding moment with respect to the second axis (18) are determined in the laden state; and the mass and the position of the centre of gravity of the additional load (10) in relation to the carrier (20) are determined from the overall moments of inertia and the holding moments with respect to the first axis (16) and the second axis (18).The invention also relates to a movement system (12), which is designed to determine the mass and the position of the centre of gravity of an additional load (10) according to such a method.
