The present invention relates to a system and method for separating steel and magnetite. The system comprises: at least one feed box (1); and at least one vibrating screen (5) for separating by particle size, which sends particles smaller than or equal to 60 mm to a first subsystem (6) for separating steel and magnetite and particles larger than 60 mm to a second separation subsystem (8). According to the invention, the first separation subsystem (6) comprises a conveyor belt (6c) and a plurality of sensors (6d) disposed below the belt (6c), and the second separation subsystem (8) comprises a plurality of channels (8b) mounted on the vibrating system (8c) installed in the area of the feed end of the channels (8b). A replacement part, made from an abrasion-resistant hard polymer, is provided at the end of the section of the particle conveying path of each channel (8b), said part allowing the material to slide in an improved manner into the unit separation zone, which consists of an abrasion-resistant metal separation plate, and a plurality of detectors (8c) for detecting steel in magnetite mineral, mounted at the end of the conveying line of the four channels (8b), each separation plate being secured physically to a rod of a pneumatic cylinder (8d).
