Disclosed is a wedge brake for the field of public safety, which relates to a braking apparatus in the field of public safety. A friction brake has the functions of braking, decelerating and immobilization. However, braking apparatuses of some machines, such as cranes, elevators, large entertainment facilities and aerial ropeways, do not require the deceleration function. The disadvantages of the friction brake, i.e. large volume, small braking force and many faults, are obvious in these occasions, which is unsafe. The wedge brake can make up for this gap. The structure thereof is substantially the same as that of a wedge overrunning clutch, with the difference lying in the wedging angle between wedges (21, 22) and inner and outer rings (6, 1). In order to enable the wedges (21, 22) and the inner ring (6) of the brake to successfully complete work tasks, and to enable the wedges (21, 22) and the inner and outer rings (6, 1) to be easily disengaged by means of manual force after work is finished, the wedge angle is within 6° - 8°, and considering the wear and the service life, 6° - 6°30' are recommended.
