Provided by the embodiments of the present disclosure are an unread message prompt method and mobile terminal, the method comprising: if the mobile terminal receives an unread message when in an off-screen state, identifying the application program which pushed the unread message; and projecting an icon displaying said application program on a screen of the mobile terminal, wherein the parts of the screen where the icon is not displayed remain in an off-screen state.
